Swearing is culture-specific. The differences ex- isting between cultures in what is regarded as taboo are therefore directly reflect- ed in the swearing they use. Most western societies share taboos related to subjects such as sex, religion, intimate bodily functions and concealed parts of the body. This does not mean, however, that there are no significant differences between the two languag- es. In the language or bad language of swearing there is one undoubtedly prominent word: fuck. It can express pain and pleasure, hate and love, surprise and an- noyance, trouble, confusion or difficulty.
